Fire Salamander: The Mythology
Although the Fire Salamander is a real creature, it is surrounded in myth. Fire salamanders are said to be fire itself because they are drawn to hot areas and lay their eggs in fire.
According to medieval European folklore, fire salamanders were used in alchemy to give protection from fire. However, these animals are both difficult to find, and capture. Mythology describes fire salamanders as poisonous creatures. Their outer skin is venomous and gives them protection from fire and mammals. The fire salamander can be found during heavy storms when they come out to clean their skin. During the cold months, fire salamanders hide in decayed logs, protecting them from their surrounding danger. |
